🏈 First Round Highlights
Tennessee Titans: No surprises at the top the Titans locked in QB Cam Ward, viewed by many as the future face of their franchise. His dual-threat ability makes him a tantalising prospect for a team desperate for a spark. Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jags pulled off a headline-making trade to move up to No. 2 and grabbed Travis Hunter, a two way phenom who can shine on both sides of the ball. It’s a bold move that shows they’re serious about making noise in the AFC. New York Giants: Big Blue focused on the trenches, snagging edge rusher Abdul Carter to add bite to their defence, hoping to improve their pass rush after a disappointing 2024 season.
The first round was heavily skewed toward offence, with eight offensive linemen and four wide receivers taken early. It’s clear that NFL teams are zeroing in on protecting their QBs and adding weapons to keep up with high-flying offences across the league.
⸻
🔄 Notable Trades
Jaguars’ Aggressive Move: Jacksonville’s move up the board to grab Hunter was one of the boldest trades we’ve seen in recent years. They gave up a significant package of future picks, but the potential upside of having a true game-changer made it worth the gamble. Texans’ Strategic Shuffle: Houston was the busiest team of the weekend, wheeling and dealing their way to 14 total picks. Their focus was clearly on building depth, especially on Day Two, setting themselves up nicely for both immediate impact and long-term success.
⸻
📉 Surprising Slides
A draft wouldn’t be complete without a shocker and Shedeur Sanders’ tumble was exactly that. Expected by many to go on Day One or early Day Two, Sanders slid all the way to the fifth round, finally landing with the Cleveland Browns at pick 144. There’s been plenty of chatter about Aaron Rodgers’ possible influence on Pittsburgh’s decision to pass on him, but regardless of the behind the scenes politics, Sanders now has a big opportunity to prove his doubters wrong.

🏆 Team Performances
Dallas Cowboys: Sticking true to their identity, the Cowboys placed a big emphasis on drafting high-character players. They added several former college captains to their roster, including standout guard Tyler Booker in the first round a move that reinforces their commitment to building a tough, disciplined squad. Washington Commanders: The Commanders took a balanced approach, mixing veteran acquisitions like Laremy Tunsil with draft picks who can contribute right away. Linebacker Kain Medrano stood out as a particularly smart pick, offering versatility and depth at a key defensive position. Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles were aggressive in trying to climb the board to secure linebacker Jihaad Campbell, highlighting their clear intent to beef up the middle of their defence. While they didn’t quite pull off the trade, their bold approach drew praise across the league.
⸻
🌟 Standout Picks
Luther Burden III (WR, Chicago Bears): Widely regarded as the best receiver in the draft, Burden’s explosiveness and knack for turning short gains into big plays will add a new dimension to Chicago’s passing game. Fans should expect to see him making highlight reels early and often. Ashton Jeanty (RB, Las Vegas Raiders): Drafted sixth overall, Jeanty’s mix of speed and power makes him one of the most exciting additions to the Raiders’ offence in years. He’s the kind of back who can take it to the house from anywhere on the field a real difference maker.
⸻
🧠 Draft Trends
This year’s draft continued several familiar trends:
Offensive Priorities: Teams doubled down on beefing up their offences, particularly in the trenches and at the skill positions. Protecting quarterbacks and stretching the field were clear points of emphasis. SEC Pipeline: The SEC’s dominance carried on unabated, with 79 players drafted overall and 28 of those coming in the first two rounds. If you’re looking for future NFL stars, the Southeastern Conference remains the place to watch.
